What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
According to the Mayo Clinic, carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure to the median nerve, found in your wrist. The median nerve passes through an opening in your wrist called the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is a small passageway on the palm side of your hand that is surrounded by ligaments and bones. Repetitive motions can cause the ligaments to swell, creating pressure on the median nerve.
Can you Fix Carpal Tunnel Without Surgery?
If you are diagnosed early enough, non-surgical treatment may help your carpal tunnel syndrome. Three methods of non-surgical treatment for carpal tunnel include:
- Wearing a wrist splint – Splinting and wearing a wrist brace will hold your wrist still and allow the tissue to heal.
- Taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). NSAIDs include, but are not limited to, over-the-counter medicines such as ibuprofen (found in Advil and Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin.
- Receiving Cortisone Shots – Cortisone is a type of corticosteroid. Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation which relieves pressure on the median nerve. They are injected directly into the pain site, often using ultrasound to help guide the injection.
Can Carpal Tunnel go Away?
Carpal tunnel is a condition that if treated as early as possible, may go away. Treatment includes taking breaks to rest your hands, avoiding movements that make the condition worse, applying cold to help reduce swelling. Wrist splints and wrist braces can help with treatment. This treatment will take time and often will only work if done at the onset of symptoms. If you wait to control the symptoms of carpal tunnel it can become worse and unbearable to the point of possibly needing surgery. If surgery is needed, a doctor will cut a small incision in your wrist and enlarge the carpel tunnel to relieve pressure.
Will a Wrist Brace Help a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac or lump that develops most commonly on the back of the wrist. Ganglion cysts are not harmful, and treatment often includes a wrist brace. Infrequently, severe pain develops but typically, non-surgical treatments are exhausted before surgery is discussed.
Ganglion cysts are not cancerous and may disappear on their own. If you have mild symptoms, and the cyst doesn’t bother you, your doctor will likely recommend waiting and watching.
